Through autumnal atmosphere, urban sensibility, and the fluidity of watercolor, Wu Zhiyong transforms personal memory into a visual poem with cross-cultural resonance.

Taiwanese artist Wu Zhiyong participates in the 82nd “Genten” Exhibition in Japan with his work Autumn of Nostalgia. This year’s exhibition will be held from May 27 to June 8, 2026, at The National Art Center, Tokyo, and is organized by the Japan Contemporary Artists Association.

Wu Zhiyong is one of the Taiwanese artists participating in this year’s 82nd “Genten” Exhibition in Japan. His work Autumn of Nostalgia takes watercolor, autumnal imagery, and urban memory as its primary forms of expression. The special review describes his work through “watercolor flow, liquid city, and the flâneur’s elegy,” showing that Wu Zhiyong’s artistic background is closely related to urban sensibility, the flow of time, personal memory, and a consciousness of nostalgia.

Among the works of Taiwanese artists in this year’s exhibition, Wu Zhiyong’s creation is marked by a clear sense of narrative and emotion. His work transforms the transparent, diffused, and flowing qualities of watercolor into a way of viewing urban experience and life memory.

Autumn of Nostalgia uses watercolor as its primary medium. Through its transparent, diffused, and flowing visual qualities, the work presents urban memory and emotional retrospection within an autumnal atmosphere. The “nostalgia” to which the work refers is not merely simple reminiscence, but a renewed gaze upon places of memory amid movement, urbanization, and the passage of time.

Within the exhibition setting of The National Art Center, Tokyo, in Roppongi, Autumn of Nostalgia brings the local memories of a Taiwanese artist into the view of international audiences, while also allowing “nostalgia” to become a shared feeling that transcends language and region.

  • Autumn of Nostalgia expresses time and memory through the fluidity of watercolor.
  • The work can be interpreted from the perspectives of “liquid city” and “the flâneur’s elegy.”
  • Nostalgia is transformed in the work into an intersection of urban experience and personal emotion.
