Liau Chun-Yi is one of the Taiwanese artists participating in this year’s 82nd “Genten” Exhibition in Japan. Her work Unfinished・Floating Realm uses flowers, flowing colors, and a suspended composition as its primary visual language. Placed within the context of “liquid modernity, suspended flowers, and psychological topology,” her practice shows that Liau Chun-Yi’s artistic background can be understood as a visual exploration of contemporary psychological states, a sense of fluidity, and unfinished life experiences.

Among the portraits of Taiwanese artists in this year’s exhibition, Liau Chun-Yi’s work possesses distinct psychological and poetic qualities. Her creation does not simply reproduce flowers; rather, through the suspension, drifting movement, and spatial openness of floral forms, she transforms natural imagery into inner perception and a spiritual field.

Unfinished・Floating Realm presents a spatial state between reality, memory, and psychology through suspended floral images and a flowing pictorial structure. The word “Unfinished” in the title points to a life condition that remains incomplete and continues to unfold, while “Floating Realm” suggests an unstable, open, and drifting spiritual field.

Within the exhibition setting of The National Art Center, Tokyo, Unfinished・Floating Realm is not only a presentation of an individual artistic practice, but also brings the psychological landscape of a Taiwanese artist into the public viewing field of Japan’s contemporary art system.

  • Unfinished・Floating Realm uses suspended flowers to symbolize the uncertainty of contemporary states of life.
  • The work can be understood from the perspectives of “liquid modernity” and “psychological topology.”
  • Flowers are no longer merely decorative subjects, but projections of psychological space and spiritual states.
