Starting from the image of fish, Chen Fu-Chi combines digital imagery, the texture of imitation xuan paper, and posthuman perception, demonstrating the capacity of Taiwanese contemporary art to translate between media.

Taiwanese artist CHEN FU-CHI participates in the 82nd “Genten” Exhibition in Japan with his work The Pleasure of Fish, which has also been selected for the “Special Project Exhibition Area.” The exhibition will be held from May 27 to June 8, 2026, at The National Art Center, Tokyo, in Roppongi, Tokyo, and is organized by the Japan Contemporary Artists Association.

Chen Fu-Chi is one of the Taiwanese artists participating in this year’s 82nd “Genten” Exhibition in Japan. His work The Pleasure of Fish takes digital imagery, the texture of imitation xuan paper, and the image of fish as its core forms of expression. The special review places his work within the context of “digital simulacra, imitation xuan paper, and posthuman freedom,” showing that Chen Fu-Chi’s artistic background is characterized by the intersection of traditional Eastern imagery and contemporary digital media.

Among the portraits of Taiwanese participants, Chen Fu-Chi’s work represents a direction of media translation: rather than presenting natural imagery through traditional brush and ink, he reconsiders the relationship between nature, freedom, and modes of viewing through digital forms, imitation xuan-paper visuals, and posthuman perception.

The Pleasure of Fish takes fish as its central image. Through digital media and the visual texture of imitation xuan paper, it reconsiders the relationship among traditional ink painting, natural imagery, and contemporary technology. The fish in the work are not merely representations of natural creatures, but more like visual symbols that move between reality and simulacra.

Within the system of Japan’s contemporary art open-call exhibitions, The Pleasure of Fish demonstrates how Taiwanese artists respond to changes in media: on the one hand, it preserves the natural and spiritual imagery of Eastern culture; on the other hand, it opens new possibilities of viewing through digital forms.

  • The Pleasure of Fish combines digital imagery with the texture of imitation xuan paper.
  • The image of fish is transformed into a symbol of freedom, movement, and spiritual ease.
  • The work can be understood from the perspectives of “digital simulacra” and “posthuman perception.”
